The AKC Standard calls him "an animal of spirited disposition, self-willed, brave, and very resistant to fatigue." Emotionally the Portuguese Water Dog is stable and sensible. But physically he's lively and athletic, poised for any activity. He loves to play and needs vigorous exercise: long walks, occasional runs, and swimming whenever possible, for he is a master swimmer and diver if he chooses to be. As with any breed you will some times see a Labrador that will not swim, a German Shorthair that will not hunt or even a Doberman that loves people and forgets to protect, there are those Portuguese Water Dogs that do not like the water. Mental stimulation is just as important to this clever, thinking breed as the exercise. We curve this by playing hide and seek, find the ball, treat balls and treat puzzles. When well socialized, his reaction to strangers varies from friendly to polite, however do not be surprised with the dog that is indifferent to your visit (often this gets them more attention and they know how to work a room). This observant breed makes a fine watchdog, but not a good guard dog.
Portuguese Water Dogs are strong-minded, with an independent streak and a wicked sense of humour. Consistent leadership is a must. A natural retriever, the Portuguese Water Dog is a very mouthy dog who will pick up everything in his path, chew up both edible and inedible objects, and try to gnaw on your hands. It is indicative to this breed to like metal and at a very young age will take your Car Keys and hide them from you. Most Portuguese Water Dog breeders and owners have key racks up high or key clips. It is best to provide a box filled with toys so he can satisfy his oral fixation by carrying something around in his mouth. Youngsters are especially rambunctious, bore easily, and without enough attention and structured activity can excavate vast chasms in your yard.

If you want a dog who...

Is medium-sized, strong and durable, agile
Has a curly or wavy coat
Sheds less than many other breeds
Thrives on activities and mental challenges
Makes a fine watchdog, but is too polite to be a guard dog
Is usually fine with other pets
A Portuguese Water Dog may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...

exercise requirements
Rowdiness and exuberant behaviour, especially when young
Destructiveness when bored
Mind of his own, requiring a confident owner who can take charge
Regular brushing and clipping
Mouthiness -- carrying and chewing objects
A Portuguese Water Dog may not be right for you.

But you can avoid or minimize some negative traits by
choosing the RIGHT breeder and the RIGHT puppy
or choosing an ADULT dog who has already proven that he doesn't have negative traits

If you simply want a pet that you can put in the back yard and go out occasionally to toss a ball for. I do not recommend this breed.

If you simply want a pet for your family, and don't have the time or inclination to make your dog a member of the family..... I do not recommend this breed.

If you do not want to live with a sense of humour that will make you laughing out loud daily I do not recommend this breed.

Grooming= Portuguese Water Dogs have a coat that requires regular brushing, clipping and trimming. But don't expect your pet PWD to look like the show dogs you've seen in books or on TV. That particular look takes hours of work by experienced show groomers.
